How vegetarianism is portrayed in film.
Yeah, unfortunately this page just isn't going to work. It began as a sort of sociological observation of how vegetarians are portrayed in popular culture. Since I'm a film buff I choose movies as my slice of the populur culture pie to observe.
Much to my surprise I discovered vegetarianism pops up quite frequently in films, more than I could keep up with. I also discovered that it just isn't enjoyable watching a film only to look for a reference, especially when most of the films are mediocre or just plain crap. So I've decided to no longer update this page with my own personal evaluations. I will keep the page up, though, for anyone who's interested in the subject.
Some of the references show vegetarianism in a positive light, others negative, but one thing is constant--none provide much information on the lifestyle, most provide only vague stereotypes. So if your a newbie vegetarian the lesson here is to research this lifestyle before making decisions about it--don't go by what you observe in the popular culture. Every social group is misunderstood to a certain extent by the stereotypes that exist about them.
Babe (1995) Although it contains no stated reference to vegetarianism this film is concerned with animal rights issues. It begins in a hog growing plant with the narrator stating "There was a time not long ago when pigs were afforded no respect and treated with cruelty"--a clever critique of the slaughterhouse of today. During the same scene a truck drives by with the ironic logo of Sunny Valley Meats painted on it--a pun about how the meat industry hides the cruelty of their business. Later farmer Hoggit picks up a little pig (later to be called Babe of course) to try to guess its weight while the narrator states the pig and farmer regarded each other--a nice pro-animal rights plug. There are a few other iffy references as well, but you get the idea.
Buffalo 66 (1998) Billy has been released from prison after five years. He wants to impress his uncaring parents--hoping to gain their love--so kidnaps Layla and forces her to pretend she's his wife. The veggie reference occurs in Layla's car before the two pull up to Billy's parent's home. She tells Billy she hopes his parents are vegetarians because she never eats meat. But later in the film she does eat cow intestines to not offend Billy's parents. The reference works as a way for Layla to express her individuality (against Billy's slave-like commands) and as a gag and to create conflict between her and Billy--she didn't want to eat those intestines. No connotation is placed upon vegetarianism except that the character of Layla is somewhat odd.
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) Megan's parents fear that she is a lesbian and for this reason send her to a camp that promises to turn her into a heterosexual. However things don't go quite as planned. The references to vegetarianism come at the beginning of the film. At the dinner table Megan's plate contains no meat and a little later her parents and camp employees cite her vegetarianism as proof she is a lesbian. Overall I think people will take the references to vegetarianism in this film as negative because they are linked to homosexuality which is still not widely accepted in society (personally I've never heard of the two being linked before but whatever). Besides that tofu is portrayed as something that is disgusting by Megan's mom...something which is never good. :)
Go (1999) A film about the stupid things you can get away with when you're young. The story is told from three different intersecting viewpoints all revolving around the California nightclub scene. Adam starts having a breakdown after you runs over one of the characters with his car and Zack tries to calm him down by making him think they're in the studio and are only acting out a scene He does this by trying to convince him that the service truck that sells the veggie burgers is just around the corner. Overall it's a positive reference. Although some may not accept Adam and Zack because they are gay they are likable and hip characters.
Hannibal (2001) Hannibal Lector the murderous psychologist who escaped from prison in the Silence of the Lambs is still on the loose. FBI agent Starling who conversed with Hannibal in the first film in order find a killer is trying to capture him. Another character, Paul, is attempting to ruin Starlings career so she will not be able to capture Hannibal before another character, Mason, can extract his revenge on him. The veggie reference occurs at Paul's lake home where Hannibal has taken Starling after she passed out. Hannibal has Starling pinned against the front of a refrigerator door and on the top of the refrigerator is a Vegetarian Times cookbook which must belong to Paul or a member of his family. It's a fairly neutral reference. I think it was included since someone thought it would make a good pun contrasting with the cannibalism and gore of the film.
Jurassic Park (1993) A wealthy business man creates a park housing genetically engineered dinosaurs on an island off the coast of Costa Rica. He flies in specialists and his grandchildren to be the first ones to see the island. The first reference occurs as the visitors are parked outside of the T-Rex padlock in hope of seeing the beast. A goat has been entered into the padlock in order to get the T-Rex to show herself to the visitors. In the scene Lex comments on her shock that the T-Rex is going to eat the goat and that she is a vegetarian. Later in the film Lex eats a plate of veggies and fruits in contrast to her brother Tim who eats junk food. Fairly neutral references.
Legally Blonde (2001) Elle Woods gets dumped by her boyfriend before he leaves to attend Harvard Law School--he thinks that she's too ditsy to be marrying material. In response Elle decides to also attend Harvard Law, hoping to win him back. The reference occurs just after Elle arrives at Harvard and is introducing herself to a group of fellow students where she mentions that she and her dog are both Gemini, vegetarians. Elle's a likeable character so I consider it a good reference.
Trainspotting (1996) Film centering around a British man nicknamed Rents and his quest for meaning in life. Rents and his friends are heroin addicts and basically live to shoot up--they have no jobs and live hedonistic lives. In the reference Rents shoots a dog in the park and his friend, Sick Boy, comments that he's a hell of a shot for a vegetarian. I consider the reference fairly neutral since no other mention of vegetarianism is made in the film--it was likely included because it made for a good line.
Wag the Dog (1997) The presidential election is less than two weeks away when word gets out that the president had sexual relations with a girl scout. The team of Conrad and Winifred attempt to manipulate the media in order to distract the public from this incident and portray the president in a good light. The veggie reference occurs when Conrad and Winifred enter the home of Stanley, a Hollywood producer, to enlist his help. They find him in a tanning bed and telling his butler to get him a veggie shake. A few minutes later in the scene Stanely, now out of his tanning bed, excuses himself from the conversation in order to fetch his veggie shake. Much later in the film there's a humorous scene where Winifred confronts Stanley over his idealist attitudes. She doesn't mention vegetarianism but she does mention values many vegetarians are likely to share. I would say these are positive references. Stanley, while dishonest and eccentric, is a likeable character. That veggie shake he drinks is pretty gross looking, though.
And more too These films are also supposed to contain references.
